I have been working on several software programs for the use of military modellers, wargamers and uniform researchers alike to be release through my company Woolford Consulting. These all focus on the Napoleonic Wars. Stay tuned as I make updates and post other information. I have many books on the topic that are out of print as well as some small run pamphletts I am thinking of posting here. I am happy to share on request within the bounds of copyright. Obviously these projects are long term, I do not envisage a working prototype being available until 2009 on any of them. I have also been linking my site through to my reviews of books on Amazon and will add modelling links as well soon! I was thinking of doing small PDFs for different countries and making them available on this website. These would include basic unit information such as organisation and numbers as well as average numbers on campaign, uniform colours etc. and cannon colours (I don;t know about you but you would think this would be easy to find out, right?) etc. If you think it is a good idea then email me!
Update: The first book Portuguese in the Peninsula is under way. The artwork has also been commisioned, John Shelly, a wonderful artist will be doing the prints. I am not sure how we will release it. Perhaps free as an ePrint as a taster for whatever else we do?
So I mainly do 15mm Napoleonic Modelling (really more like 18-20mm since I use AB and Fantassin models). However I have been modelling for over 20 years now and started out in 25mm Napoleonics, but have done ancients, medieval, middle ages, 18th century European and fantasy tom name some.
My kids model now too. they like the GamesWorkshop models, especially the Lord of the Rings series. They also do ancients, my daughter is creating an early Imperial Roman legion (we haven't talked about auxilaries yet) and one of my sons is doing a composite army of troops from around the Aegean. It is all done at a scale of 20-25:1, so the units are a good size. We do not wargame much, but will as we get more models together.
Models I buy:
Napoleonics
AB: Eureka (Aus)
Fantassin: Scale Creep Miniatures (US)
Ancients
AB: Eureka (Aus)
Xyston: Olympian Games (Aus)
Books:
Osprey (of course)
Elting
Esposito (why is this so hard to get? Why don't they re-release it? I talked to Lowenthal at Greenhill books and he said they were considering whether to reprint it! So who knows. I went and got a second hand copy anywaybecause I couldn't wait.)
Haythorthwaite
Elting and Knotel
And others
Internet resources:
My absolute favourite site for info on Napoleonic models has to be DeepFriedHappyMice. This site is what led me to buy AB and Fantassin. It has a host of information and an exceptional selection of links.
Below are four pics of a Dutch Battallion I am working on. They are Fantassin models bought through Scale Creep. They still need a bit of work but are good enough to wargame with. |

To the left are some prussians I am working on. They are in the 1812 uniform. I bought a mixture of AB and Fantassin and mixed them all together. I have one Fusilier and two Musketeer battalions and two Landwher. Although I am thinking of painting one of teh Landwher as a reserce battalion. As you can see I now undercoat in Chaos Black (Games Workshop). I have started on their coats and faces. I am thinking of redoing the coats a dark prussian blue so I can more easily do highlights. Also, next time I will get all the identical models and do them up on tounge depressers as suggested at Deepfriedhappymice.com. At the moment I do all my models into rows of four and go from their. I will post as I paint more of these models. |
| Below you can see different spaces I work from. The first is a chopping board I made in highschool, you can see some of the prussians on there. I use a cup of clean water and a cup of warm water with a drop or two of detergent to clean my brushes in. The next shot is my hobby mat where I make bases and prepare models for painting. The Xyston bags are Ancient Greeks (my son Loki's), there is also Von Zastrow Curraisiers, Prussian Dragoons, The Dutch Battalion you can see in the pictures above and a bunch of undercoated Prussians. Bottom on the left are two modelling tables I made especially, but I want to set up a dedicated table to painting now. And bottom on the right are some of my reference books I use for painting my Napoleonics etc. The ones I use most are Elting's four volume set and Haythornthwaite's Napoleonic Sourcebook. Last but not least is my paints box. I prefer Vallejo paints but use anything really. I have a tonne of cheap artists paints which come in handy for all sorts of things. I only use acrylics normally. |
